Bulaq Abul Ella Misdemeanor Court has thrown out a case brought against telecoms tycoon and liberal politician Naguib Sawiris by a group of lawyers who accused him of showing contempt for religion.
The court, headed by Judge Sherif Kamel, dismissed the case on Saturday on the grounds that the plaintiffs had no legal standing in the case.
Sawiris, the head of Orascom Telecom who and founder of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, tweeted a cartoon in June of Mickey Mouse with a long beard and Minnie Mouse veiled in black.
Sawiris later apologized, but some customers boycotted his company when news of the tweeted cartoon spread.
Last month another court dismissed a separate case against Sawiris, also for insulting Islam, likewise saying that it had been filed by individuals who "lack legal standing."
The plaintiff in the case dismissed on Saturday is MP Mamdouh Ismail, a hardline Islamist lawyer with the ultra-conservative Nour Party, state news agency MENA reported.
Nour came second to the more moderate Islamist Freedom and Justice Party in a three-round election that began in November, leaving Parliament with an Islamist majority for the first time in Egypt's history.
The liberal coalition that included Sawiris's Free Egyptians party won around 15 percent of the vote.
Earlier last month, the Arab world's most famous comic actor, Adel Imam, received a three-month jail sentence in absentia for insulting Islam in various films and plays.
Sawiris is a vocal critic of the Islamist parties that have emerged in Egypt since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February last year. The Free Egyptians Party advocates the separation of state and religion.
