Court hands life sentences to 30 Muslim Brotherhood members

Mansoura Criminal Court has given life sentences to 30 members of the Muslim Brotherhood in Daqahliya after they were convicted on a range of charges, including murder.

The 30 were among a total of 74 group members given sentences ranging from three years to 25 years. The accused were tried in seven criminal cases, with other charges including joining a banned group, protesting and blocking roads.

In 2013, the government declared the Muslim Brotherhood an illegal organization, several months after the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi, who was linked with the organization.

Hundreds of Brotherhood members and leaders were given jail sentences, while others are still being tried in cases relating to terrorism, illegal protests and violence.
