The Mokattam Misdemeanor Court sentenced 99 persons on Wednesday to one year in prison over charges of rioting in front of the Mokattam police station following the death of Mohammed Abdel Hakem, known as “Afroto”, in January 2018.
Afroto was arrested on January 5 over charges of carrying drugs. However, upon his transfer to the Mokattam police station, Afroto felt the severe urge to vomit. He was then transferred to the hospital where he died.
The South Cairo Criminal Court sentenced a police officer from the Mokattam police station to three years in prison and a non-commissioned officer to six months in November over charges of killing “Afroto”.
Investigations revealed that the police officers detained Afroto, 22, in January 2018 after they stopped him without legal justification and beat him.
Forensic reports showed that the cause of Afroto’s death was internal bleeding caused by a broken rib and a laceration in the left lung due to severe hits.
