Court orders return of Meguid Mahmoud as prosecutor general

Egypt's Court of Cassation on Tuesday upheld a previous ruling ordering the return of former Prosecutor General Abdel Maguid Mahmoud to his post.

The court simultaneously rejected challenges filed by Talaat Abdallah, the current prosecutor general, who was appointed by President Mohamed Morsy when he issued the controversial Constitutional Declaration in November 2012.

Abdallah's former assistant, Hassan Yassin will act as acting prosecutor general until a new official is appointed, state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported in the wake of the announcement.

In March, the Cairo Court of Appeals order Abdel Meguid Mahmoud to be reinstated to his former post, annulling a decree by Morsy replacing him with Talaat Abdallah.

The president’s 22 November Constitutional Declaration, aside from immunizing his decisions from judicial review, also named Talaat Abdallah as the new prosecutor general.

The move sparked a wave of protests and violent clashes, particularly in front of the Ettehadiya Palace in Cairo.
