Court sets 28 Sept as verdict date in case of former information minister

Cairo Criminal Court set the verdict date in the trial of former Information Minister Anas al-Fiqqi to 28 September, judicial sources said Monday.

Fiqqi is accused of intentionally squandering US$1.88 million from the Radio and Television Union's funds.

Investigations under the supervision of Counsel Ali al-Hawary allege that Fiqqi illegally exempted Egyptian satellite channels from fees for direct broadcast of football matches during the 2009 to 2010 season and the beginning of the 2010 to 2011 season.

The court on Monday listened to Fiqqi's defense, which said the Radio and Television Union does not have the right to determine direct broadcast fees as this is a telecommunications service rather than a TV service.

In March, Egypt’s Public Prosecution referred Fiqqi and former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros-Ghali to trial on charges of squandering LE36 million in public funds on campaigning for the National Democratic Party.

Investigations alleged that Fiqqi requested the LE36 million from the Finance Ministry to spend on media coverage of the parliamentary and Shura Council elections.

However, the Cairo Criminal Court in July found the two former ministers not guilty.
