Court upholds acquittal of ex-tourism minister in land sale case

The Court of Cassation has rejected the appeal filed by the prosecution against clearing the former tourism minister Zouheir Garana of charges of profiteering and facilitating the seizure of 5 million square meters of state-owned land in Ain Sokhna.

The Giza Criminal Court had earlier acquitted Garana and other defendants from charges of seizing the land.

Garana was accused of selling the land to construction tycoon Hesham al-Hazek in 2007 for US$1 per square meter – ten times less than the market price at the time.
