Court upholds imprisonment sentence of novelist disparaging God

The Beba Court in Beni Suef on Thursday upheld a five-year imprisonment sentence issued in absentia more than two years ago against Karam Saber Ibrahim, member of the Writers Union, on charges of contempt of religion and disparaging God in his novel “Where is God.”

The court said it relied on reports of the Al-Azhar Institution and the Fatwa Institution that condemned the novel and demanded the author to repent.

Ibrahim denied the charge and said he would appeal it.
