Students at Damanhour University in Beheira began on Sunday their third week of strikes in protest of poor educational and scientific services. Other students are protesting the hike in university fees.
Students at the Faculty of Dentistry are demanding transfers to the universities of Tanta and Alexandria, citing what they described as a “lack of educational and scientific capabilities” at their university, noting that though they joined the college in 2014, they have never attended practical lectures.
The students also complained about the absence of labs, which they say forced them to shift their practical lectures to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
“Come to the college wearing slippers, that’s all it's worth”, read the slogan written by the striking students who decried a failure by the administrators to respond to their requests for transfer.
The same university also witnessed a protest on Saturday by more than 1,500 educational diploma students who complained of an increase of fees from LE680 to LE1,070 per term. The students threatened to stage a sit-in until the fees are reduced.
The protestors added they were asked to pay LE100 for an admission medical test which they have yet to undergo, despite the first semester's completion.
