Delaying Association Law would return Egypt to black list, says committee head

Delaying passage of the Freedom of Association Law and ignoring labor problems in Egypt would put it back on the International Labor Organization (ILO) black list, said Karin Kratz, head of the Freedom of Association Committee.

Kratz called for expediting the law after discussing it with workers, business owners and the government.

She also said that Egypt was dropped from the black list after the government issued the Freedom of Association Draft Bill in June, not immediately after the 25 January unrest, as some believed.

Kratz denied statements by Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions officials claiming that the ILO apologized after selecting a member of an independent union to head the Egyptian delegation to the last ILO conference in Switzerland.
