April 6 Youth Movement said in a statement Thursday that Movement general coordinator Ahmed Maher, Movement spokepserson Mohamed Adel, and activist Ahmed Douma have started a hunger strike against “harsh and inhumane treatment in Tora Prison.”
The statement added that the mistreatment is part of a psychological war against activists, calling on the National Council for Human Rights to visit the prison and inspect the harsh living conditions of political prisoners.
“The prison administration prevented winter clothing to [activists], which might put their lives at risk in light of that unrivaled cold weather,” the statement read.
The movement held the Interior Ministry and Justice Ministry responsible for the safety of detained activists.
Abdeen Misdemeanor Court sentenced Maher, Adel, and Douma to three years and a fine of LE50,000 each last Sunday on charges of assaulting security forces outside the court, showing force, assembling and attacking public and private facilities.
