Burundi has promised Egypt that it would not sign a separate Nile Basin agreement on the redistribution of Nile water, according to Egyptian diplomatic sources.
Earlier this year, five upstream states of the Nile Basin signed on to the deal–implementation of which would reduce Egypt's and Sudan's historical shares of Nile water–in Entebbe, Uganda.
“Officials in Burundi told me they would not sign the agreement,” Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Mona Omar said.
