Drinking water shortages in several governorates leave residents thirsty in Ramadan

Several governorates have suffered from shortages of drinking water during the first week of the holy month of Ramadan.

In the Tawfikia village of Damietta, water has been cut for 15 days, except for a few hours in the morning. “The taps in our homes have become decoration,” says Sherif Mohamed, one of the villagers.

Ahmed Metwally, public relations director of the water company, says the water will be back after the maintenance operations in the main pipeline are completed.

In the Tama village of Sohag, people say they buy water in jerry cans from the neighboring villages, adding that as the sewage development project in the village has been delayed, the water in the wells they have dug is mixed with sewage. “Even the filters are no good,” says al-Husseini Tantawi.

Mahmoud Nafie of the water company says the problem would be solved as soon as the new water plant on the Nile is operational.

In the Hajj Sallam village of Qena, people also had to buy water in jerry cans from the neighboring villages.
