Egypt advances in international renewable energy indexes: Cabinet

The Egyptian Cabinet’s Media Center announced Monday that Egypt’s rankings in international renewable energy indicators have improved, and the Media Center posted a statement with an infographic highlighting Egypt’s boom in renewable energy.

The statement said that Egypt’s ranking in the Climate Change Performance Index 2019 rose to rank 24 compared to 28 in 2018, in addition to Egypt ranking 32nd place worldwide and third place in the Middle East and North Africa in the index of renewable energy regulation efficiency in the Global Competitiveness Report 2019.

According to the infographic, Egypt’s ranking with the World Bank’s Regulatory Indicators for Sustainable Energy  for 2017 also improved in seven years to become one of the top 36 countries in the world, rising from 10 points to reach 68 points, an improvement of 58 points.

Eight projects were implemented in the field of renewable energy from 2014 to 2019, most notably the Benban solar project at a cost of US$2 billion, the Jebel al-Zeit wind power plant at a cost of LE12 billion, the Assiut barrage and its hydropower station, besides three solar power stations in Siwa, New Valley and the Red Sea governorate, at a cost of 60 million euros.

The statement also highlighted international praise of Egypt’s renewable energy projects.

The climatescope 2019 report said that Egypt has the second highest rate of clean energy flows in the past decade. The International Renewable Energy Agency stated that the current phase of renewable energy deployment in Egypt has created 6,000 direct and indirect jobs in 2018, while the World Bank praised the Benban plant project.

The infographic showed an increase in total renewable energy production by 76 percent from July 2014 to June 2020, targeted to reach 5,800 MWh in 2019/2020, compared to 5,100 MWh in 2018/2019, 4,000 MWh in 2017/2018 and 3,500 MWh during 2016/17 and 2015/16.

In terms of strategic targets for renewable energy, the infographic showed that it is targeted produce 20 percent of total electricity from new and renewable sources by 2022, and 42 percent of total electricity from new and renewable sources by 2035.
