A police patrol apprehended on Saturday night and Sunday morning eight illegal African migrants attempting to enter Israel through Sinai, an official Egyptian source said.
Police fired warning shots, prompting the migrants to stop. They were five Ethiopians, two Sudanese and an Eritrean. They told investigators they sought to get to Israel to find work, and said they each paid smuggling gangs US$1000.
Egyptian border security forces have been criticized frequently in recent years for using live fire against illegal African migrants.
