Egypt calls on all countries to join Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Egypt’s foreign minister has called on all countries to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as part of international efforts to achieve nuclear security.

Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr gave this statement at the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit in South Korea, according to a Foreign Ministry statement issued Tuesday.

More than 50 countries are participating in the summit, along with the secretary general of the United Nations, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency and head of the European Commission.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Amr Roshdy said the atomic agency’s system of “comprehensive guarantees” is of paramount importance to achieving nuclear security.

Roshdy added that the minister emphasized the need to make the Middle East free of nuclear weapons.

During the summit, the minister also referred to an international conference the UN will hold next year to discuss the establishment of a nuclear-free Middle East, in response to an Egyptian initiative.

An Egyptian delegation led by Amr is participating in the summit, which is scheduled to end Tuesday.
