Egypt calls on Syria to stop targeting civilians

Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr called on all parties to stop targeting civilians in Syria on Tuesday, calling on the Syrian government to start implementing the Arab initiative, which he said is the only possible way out of the crisis.

At a meeting on Tuesday with Zhang Ming, China's special envoy for the Middle East, Amr said that resorting to the UN Security Council was not a call for military intervention in Syria.

“We looked for international support for the Arab League initiative that aims to resolve the crisis peacefully,” he said, noting that the UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution by an overwhelming majority in support of the Egyptian stance backing the Arab initiative.

“The Security Council’s failure to issue a resolution should not be interpreted as a green light for the situation in Syria,” he said, calling on China to urge the Syrian government to accept the Arab initiative and on the Syrian opposition to provide a unified vision for dealing with the situation on the ground.
