Egypt called for urgently reaching an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Sudan, alongside the necessity of preserving its unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions, in order to safeguard the Sudanese people’s resources and stability.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed, during a phone call, with the US President’s Senior Advisor for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs, Senior Advisor for African Affairs, Massad Boulos, the latest developments in both Sudan and Libya.
UN warns of atrocities in Sudan
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned of serious atrocities and violations being committed by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians trapped in al-Fasher, North Darfur, and Bara, North Kordofan.
Türk called for urgent measures to ensure the protection of civilians in al-Fasher and secure safe passage for those attempting to reach more relatively safe areas.
“The Rapid Support Forces must urgently take concrete steps to stop and prevent violations against civilians in both al-Fasher and Bara, including tribally motivated violence and reprisal attacks,” he stressed.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the reports indicating that the RSF had seized control of al-Fasher showcase a “horrifying escalation” of the conflict.
He stressed that the time has come for the international community to call on all countries interfering in the war and supplying weapons to stop.
Guterres pointed out that the problem is not just the ongoing fighting between the army and the RSF, but also increasing foreign interference that is undermining the prospects for a ceasefire and a political solution.
Sudanese Lieutenant vows vengeance
The Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, affirmed the Sudanese army’s determination to avenge all its “martyrs”, including Sudanese citizens harmed in al-Fasher.
Burhan said that the crimes committed in al-Fasher, and those previously committed throughout Sudan in full view of the world, violate UN Security Council resolutions and all international norms.
He continued, “No one is talking about the violations of the RSF militia and no one is holding them accountable. We, as the Sudanese people, will hold these criminals accountable and we will seek retribution for the martyrs and all our people who have been wronged by the treacherous hand that does not belong to the Sudanese people.”
Burhan emphasized that the Sudanese armed forces will prevail, because they are supported by the people.
He pledged to the Sudanese people that the armed forces, the joint forces, the popular resistance, and the supporting forces are fully capable of achieving victory, and that the Sudanese army can reclaim all of their land.
Burhan affirmed the army’s determination to press on until the elimination of who he dubbed “mercenary killers”.
