Egypt coverage cut from French paper, editor claims

Samir el-Ayta, chief editor of the monthly French newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique’s Arabic edition, said that all of the paper’s reports on Egypt were subject to removal by censors at the state-run Al-Akhbar newspaper, the sole local distributor of Le Monde. "According to our agreement, Al-Akhbar censors have the right to request the complete removal of articles but have no right to change their content — they can either take it or leave it," el-Ayta explained. "But we recently noticed that they were removing all articles covering news in Egypt, be they political, economic or social in nature." Translated from the Arabic Edition.
