Egypt declares state of maximum alert following regional escalation

Egypt has declared a state of maximum alert with a crisis cell formed to monitor the situation in the region, the Cairo 24 news website reported a high-ranking Egyptian security source as saying.

The Israeli official broadcasting authority has announced that Iran has attacked Israel with dozens of drones.

“A crisis cell from all relevant agencies and institutions is closely following developments in the situation and submits its reports to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi around the clock,” the source said.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Saturday evening, expressing deep concern regarding the  launch of Iranian offensive drones against Israel which marks a dangerous escalation.

Cairo called for the utmost degree of restraint to spare the region and its peoples from further conflict and instability.

It added that this escalation is what it has repeatedly warned against, resulting from provocative military actions being practiced in the region.

The statement stressed that Egypt is remains in contact with all concerned parties to try to contain the situation, stop the escalation, and spare the region the risk of sliding into dangerous downward spiral.
