Egypt FM: Delay of U.S. aid to Egypt wrong, unacceptable

The U.S. decision to postpone delivery of aid to Egypt is "wrong and unacceptable," Turkish Anadolu news agency quoted Foreign Ministry Badr Abdel Aaty as saying on Thursday.

Abdel Aaty claimed the U.S. has not annulled military aid but will only postpone it further.

"The Egyptian Foreign Ministry is examining the U.S. position on aid and will soon issue an official, written decision [in this regard]," he added.

Abdel Aaty said that the decision sends the wrong signals to those looking to hamper Egyptian-U.S. relations. It reflects a misunderstanding of the present situation in Egypt, he added.

He also emphasized that Egypt is committed to the roadmap "not to satisfy the U.S. but to respond to the ambitions of the Egyptian people."

The Foreign Ministry has vowed not to bow to international pressure. It will only respond to the demands of Egyptians, Abdel Aaty stressed.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said in a statement on Wednesday that Washington will freeze military aid and financial assistance to the Egyptian government until Egypt achieves credible progress towards a democratically elected civilian government.
