Egypt keeps bread price steady amid fuel hike

Sharif Farouk, Egyptian Supply Minister, confirmed on Thursday that the price of subsidized bread will not change following the recent increase in diesel and fuel oil prices.

In media statements, the Supply Minister stated, “There will be no change to the price of the subsidized baladi bread, which is sold at 20 piasters per loaf and distributed through ration cards.”

Farouk pointed out that the state, represented by the General Authority for Supply Commodities under the Ministry, takes into account all cost elements and production inputs related to the production of subsidized baladi bread, including the price of diesel and gas, in light of the decisions of the automatic pricing committee for petroleum products.

He explained that citizens obtain subsidized baladi bread through ration cards at a price of 20 piasters, and the state continues to bear the difference in production costs, if any, and reimburses bakery owners through the Supply Commodities Authority. This is in line with the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade’s keenness to provide subsidized baladi bread through ration cards and distribute it regularly to citizens.

Egypt’s Petroleum Products Pricing Committee decided to increase the prices of all types of gasoline and diesel, effective Thursday, marking the second increase this year. According to the committee’s decision, gasoline and diesel prices were raised by 10 percent to 15 percent, equivalent to LE 1.25 to LE 1.5.
