Egypt military calls for media silence on referendum beginning Friday

Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces called on media outlets not to publish or broadcast any opinions, suggestions or analysis that would affect public opinion positively or negatively with respect to next Saturday's public referendum on constitutional amendments. The military wishes that its words go into effect from Friday morning, March 18 until the completion of the voting process on Saturday evening, 19 March.

The council directed this call to media outlets including Arab and foreign printed, audio, visual and electronic media.

The council released a statement Wednesday night that called for the non-publication of any material that contains information relating to the referendum, aiming at providing sufficient time and a suitable democratic atmosphere for the public to form their own opinions credibly and impartially.

The statement called on media outlets to encourage people to participate in the election and exercise their right to vote.
