Egypt's Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has appointed Mohamed al-Oraby as acting minister of foreign affairs.
Oraby was assistant Minister for Economic Affairs. He will succeed Nabil al-Araby, who was elected secretary general of the Arab League in May.
Egypt's official news agency MENA, which announced the news, did not state whether Oraby will hold the post temporarily or until the end of the transition period.
Sharaf was mandated to form a new cabinet in March to run the country during a transitional period of six months until a new president and parliament are elected.
Oraby acted as coordinator during the Arab Economic Summit held in January at Sharm al-Sheikh. He previously served as ambassador to Germany, and worked for Egyptian embassies in Kuwait, London and Washington.
