Egypt's Foreign Ministry praised the US administration for highlighting the fact that the global media has ignored many of the terrorist attacks that have occurred worldwide.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the media was intentionally covering up reports of terrorist attacks.
"You've seen what happened in Paris and Nice. All over Europe it's happening," Trump told a group of military leaders and troops, according to the Associated Press.
“It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that," the Washington Post quoted Trump as saying to the US Central Command.
Shortly after, the White House released a list of 78 terror attacks around the world, saying most of them did not get sufficient attention from the media. Nine of these attacks were in Egypt. The list is published by Washington Post shows.
Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid stressed Egypt's call upon the international community to adopt a comprehensive, consistent and non-selective strategy to combat terrorism in all its aspects; calling for both a political and a cultural approach, in additon to the security aspect.
Zeid said that, while the media highlighted the international support and sympathy shown to certain countries and communities subjected to terrorist attacks, some countries such as Egypt, which was subjected to terrorist attacks that killed hundreds, was accused of negligence.
Zeid gave examples with the downing of the Russian jet, and Botroseya church bombing, which some Western media circles tried to depict as reflecting negligence on the part of the Egyptian authorities to provide protection for the Coptic Egyptians.
He expressed Egypt's aspiration that the next stage witness a qualitative leap in the international community in dealing with the phenomenon of terrorism; and that the United States, with its influenc on the international stage, will succeed in changing how the media deals with terrorism.
