On Monday evening, Egypt received the final batch of ten new locomotives from the General Electric (GE) company at Alexandria Port, bringing the total number of received cars from the American company to 110.
It is worth noting that the Egyptian Railway Authority had contracted for 260 new railcars and simultaneously began to modernize, rehabilitate, and repair 172 existing cars in partnership with international specialists.
In addition to the 110 new railcars from GE, it reported rehabilitating 81 GE cars, importing 50 new cars from the American PRL company, and rehabilitating 50 PRL cars from the current fleet.
The authority conducted a massive overhaul of another 41 locomotives from the current fleet.
Furthermore, it signed a a long-term maintenance contract for 15 years for 141 locomotives, at a total value of US$466.3 million.
The authority also contracted for 100 new locomotives, a project funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) at about €290 million.
