A recent social media hoax claiming a missile had struck a village in Aswan, Egypt, has been debunked by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior.
In a statement, the Ministry said, “Upon investigation, the person responsible for publishing the video was identified and arrested,” noting that he is “a mobile phone repair technician residing in Qalyubia Governorate.”
The ministry explained that the accused confessed, upon confrontation, that he had obtained a video of a destroyed missile from another country through his search on social media and falsely claimed that it had fallen in Aswan Governorate, in an attempt to increase views and generate financial gain from the number of views. It added that “legal measures have been taken.”
