Egypt, Russia 2+2 talks kick off in Cairo

Egyptian-Russian talks will kick off in Cairo on Monday within the 2+2 dialogue between foreign and defense ministries of the two countries.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said the talks between Sameh Shoukry and his foreign counterpart Sergei Lavrov are expected to tackle promoting bilateral ties in all fields.

The two ministers, according to Abu Zeid, will also discuss regional issues regarding each of Libya, Syria, Yemen and Iraq as well as the Egyptian and Russian stances toward them. They will also tackle the recent terrorist incident which took place in Egypt’s Minya, in addition to other accidents which occurred in several European cities.

Egypt is the sixth country, and the only Arab country, to get engaged with Russia through the so-called 2+2 strategic dialogue on level of foreign and defense ministers after US, Russia, Italy, UK and Japan, which shows the strategic value of Egypt to Russian foreign policy

The first 2+2 meeting was held in Cairo in November 2013, while the second was in Moscow in February 2014.
