Egypt-Saudi committee emphasizes need to establish independent Palestinian state

A final statement from Egypt and Saudi Arabia’s Follow-Up and Political Consultation Committee meeting stressed the importance of the Palestinian cause, calling it the central cause of the Arab nation.

The statement also demanded a just and comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through establishing an independent Palestinian state.

The committee meeting was chaired by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.

The statement said a state should be established with borders that pertain to the 1967 agreement, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.

This statement comes as Israel has normalized ties with Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Sudan.

The new agreements have triggered massive protest from Palestine and its other ally countries, as their hopes for other Arab states to use the Palestinian cause as leverage evaporates.

Israel continues to build illegal settlements in the Palestinian-controlled West Bank, a move that was condemned last week by Shoukry.

Peace Now, an Israeli group that surveils settlement activity, reported settlement construction in 2020 to be at its highest since 2012.
