Egypt to receive millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses during May-June: Official

Egyptian Presidential Adviser for Health Affairs Mohamed Awad Tageldin announced that Egypt is waiting for millions of doses of coronavirus vaccines during May and June from China, Russia and AstraZeneca.

During a phone-in with “Hatha al-Sabah” (This Morning) show on Extra News satellite channel, Tageldin praised the state’s decision to draw from multiple sources of vaccines.

A previous meeting with the African Union also promised to provide up to 20 million doses, he added.

Regarding the surge in India, Tageldin said that research conducted on the strain there shows that the virus is stronger than the immune system can handle.

Egypt’s Health Ministry on Sunday confirmed 1,051 new coronavirus cases, up from 1,032 on Saturday. The ministry also reported 67 deaths and 800 recovered cases.

The country has now reported a total of 229,635 confirmed cases, 172,342 recovered cases, and 13,469 deaths.

Egypt launched its vaccination campaign on January 24. The Health Ministry is currently working to vaccinate medical staff first, and has opened registration for Egyptians and non-Egyptians over 65 or with chronic illnesses to register for the jab online.

Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population announced on Saturday that the nation’s weekly rate of coronavirus infections has risen to 10 percent.

However, the head of the Central Administration for Preventive Affairs at the Health and Population Ministry Mohamed Abdel-Fattah, said that this rate is “reassuring and does not cause any concern at all.”

Abdel-Fattah warned that the upcoming 10 days are the most dangerous in the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, so it is necessary to maintain social distancing, put facemasks, and register for the vaccine.
