Egyptian Communist Party ‘will operate openly’

The Egyptian Communist Party will operate openly, following decades of clandestine activity, to build on the recently-created atmosphere of freedom following the collapse of ex-president Hosni Mubarak's regime.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party said it will carry out its activities in the open, given the current atmosphere of freedom.

The party said its decision came after a mass meeting it held on Monday.

The party plans to hold its fourth general conference in the coming period, which will highlight the party's platform and organizational structure, both of which it will utilize to achieve the goals of the revolution.

The party was established as a Marxist-Leninist organization in 1922, and operated secretly between 1924 until the mid 1960s when it was dissolved. The party was reestablished in 1975.

Three leftist parties have recently announced that they will carry out their activities openly.

Since the fall of Mubarak’s regime, several groups which were previously banned have announced the formation of parties without seeking official permission to establish such parties.
