An Egyptian company won an international tender to establish a hydroelectric power station in Uganda, Egypt's electricity minister announced Wednesday.
At a press conference Wednesday, Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis said he met with Uganda's ambassador to Cairo and representatives from Egyptian electricity companies to discuss investment opportunities.
The plant, with a capacity of 700 megawatts, is part of the Egyptian government's recent initiatives to bolster cooperation with Nile Basin countries. The winning company is waiting for the necessary funding to begin designing the station.
Younis said participants in the meeting discussed how to address investment obstacles.
He said Egyptian businessmen have expressed a desire to invest in electricity projects in Uganda, where only 11 percent of the population has access to electricity.
Younis also said an Egyptian-Ugandan company has been established to invest in the electricity field and has filed for a permit to implement electricity projects.
