The Public Prosecution office in Cairo has referred Egyptian player Ahmed Yasser al-Mohamady to criminal trial on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in Qatar, the privately-owned Youm7 newspaper reported on Sunday.
After the woman filed a report, Mohamady, a player for the Qatari Al-Rayyan football team, was investigated in Qatar and then released pending a medical examination of the plaintiff and the veracity of her statements.
The investigations indicated that the suspect returned to Egypt as soon as the release decision was issued, so the investigation authorities in Qatar contacted Interpol to arrest him and complete investigations.
Mohamady, the brother of former Zamalek star Hussein Yasser al-Mohamady, was then arrested in Sharm el-Sheikh.
After a report was filed he was detained in the Abdeen police station.
The player said during investigations that he was in a relationship with the woman who filed the report, and that he did not assault her, but that it happened with her consent – contrary to the woman’s claims who accused him of luring her to his apartment and assaulting her there.
