Egyptian MP submitted request for information on Tuesday demanding the government to give a brief regarding repeated incidents of kidnapping and sexual harassment from ride-sharing application drivers.
Representative Mahmoud Essam Moussa, a member of the House of Representatives, announced the request for information from the government, represented by the Prime Minister, and Transport, Communications and Information Technology ministers.
Moussa confirmed that a woman was recently subjected to an attempted kidnapping while on her way from New Cairo to Sheikh Zayed.
The parliamentarian stressed that this incident was not the first and that, “It seems that it will not be the last.”
The recurrence of such incidents undoubtedly confirms a clear absence of oversight over smart transportation applications, he said, and that there is no scrutiny in the selection of drivers.
This matter is not easy to tackle, Moussa added, as this means of transport is essential for citizens and requires strict conditions for selection whether through experience in driving alongside good conduct overall.
The MP called on the government to review all deficiencies in this system, with real and continuous oversight needed in order to protect citizens.
