Egyptian Transport Ministry manufactures and purchases 100 locally produced electric buses

The Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir, and the Minister of the Public Business Sector, Mahmoud Esmat, witnessed the signing of a contract for the manufacture and purchase of 100 locally produced electric buses valued at LE680 million.

Coming from the MCV brand, these buses are model SETIBUS C120E.V, with the contract signed between The Arab Union Company for Land Transport and Tourism (Super Jet) a subsidiary of Transport Ministry, and the Armored Vehicles Production and Repair Factory (Factory 200 Military) of the National Authority for Military Production.

The buses will operate within the BRT bus project on the Ring Road.

An important day

Wazir called Saturday ‘very important’ as it witnessed one of the major breakthroughs in the manufacture of electric buses in Egypt, through contracting 100 electric buses to work in the first phase of the BRT project.

The first phase of the Ring Road development project has been finalized, he said, adding that BRT stations are being completed as the second phase of the project goes underway, which will increase the number of electric buses that will operate in the project as road development increases by up to 110 km.

Wazir explained that the signing is part of orders from the political leadership to localize Egypt’s transportation industries. This includes the manufacture of environmentally friendly electric buses, which he said aims to see the percentage of local manufacturing start from 50-60 percent and eventually climb to 100 percent local production.

The deal also emerged to support the results of the COP27 climate summit hosted by Egypt in Sharm el-Sheikh, he noted.

Wazir said that this form of green mass transportation represents a shift more thoughtful towards future generations, while also facilitating the transport of citizens safely and swiftly.
