Egyptian veiled female TV anchor faces backlash over wearing Burkini in episode

Egyptian veiled TV anchor Doaa Farouk recently faced a massive wave of attacks on social media, following an appearance in a burkini during an episode of her TV program ‘Haytna,’ broadcasted through privately-run TV channel Al-Nahar.

Farouk appeared in the burkini during an episode on swimming. A number of social media users argued that a veiled woman should not wear a burkini, as it may violate the rules of Islam.

In a televised response to the criticism, Farouk stated that she considered what she did as ‘personal freedom’ and no one had the right to interfere.

“Veiled women have the right to play sports, wearing a veil does not mean that a Muslim woman must bury herself and not engage in life,” she stated.
