Egyptians on Monday demonstrated in the wake of Sunday’s violence at Maspero which killed 25 people and injured 322 others.
In Aswan, Islamic groups held demonstrations condemning Coptic attacks on military personnel, while Copts ended a demonstration they started last week, for fear of increasing tensions with Muslims. The governorate had witnessed violence last week when Muslims stormed a church in the city of Edfu.
Security forces strengthened their presence around churches so as to avoid further clashes in the governorate.
In Alexandria, Ismailia, Qena, Fayoum and Assiut, Islamic forces held demonstrations, condemning incitement to sectarian strife.
“An independent commission must be formed to investigate the incident so that we do not fall into the trap of suspicious plots," said Sufi leader Gaber Qassem.
