A report issued recently by the Egyptian General Authority for Export and Import Control states that Egyptians spend some US$4 billion every year on imported grape leaves, pheasant meat, caviar, shrimp and lobster.
Another US$100 million are spent annually on importing food for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan; US$41 million on imported ice cream; and US$2 million on pet food.
According to the report, a total of US$5.4 billion are spent on imported consumer goods, which account for 8.16 percent of Egypt’s total imports.
Another report prepared jointly by official statistics agency CAPMAS and the United Nations found that Egyptian families spend 6 percent of their income on tobacco, which corresponds to LE110 per month.
