The spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Mohamed al-Qersh announced that Egypt’s agricultural exports have amounted to 5.1 million tons of fresh commodities and vegetables, worth US$2.6 billion, until the beginning of August.
In a telephone interview with TV host Ahmed Moussa on the “By My Responsibility” show broadcast on the Sada al-Balad channel, Qersh noted that there is a development in Egypt’s agricultural exports, which reach more than 160 countries around the world.
The volume of vegetable production in 2018 amounted to 19 million tons, which is now at 23 million tons, he explained.
Greenhouses have provided much higher productivity than open cultivation, Qersh said, adding that they use modern irrigation methods.
“We have sorting and packing stations at the highest level for greenhouses, and the temperatures inside are controlled, and any crop can be grown off-season,” he explained.
Qersh indicated that greenhouse agriculture achieves three times the normal productivity, and faces high prices, with the latest technological advancements.
He noted the establishment of 62,000 greenhouses for the private sector that will be used in projects to grow vegetables and fruits, showcasing that this is a profitable venture.
Qersh stressed the importance of the agricultural greenhouses at the Mohamed Naguib military base, which is considered the future of safe food in Egypt and will meet citizen needs in terms of providing vegetables and fruits.
