A viral post claiming that 25 women were kidnapped after they went for a job interview has caused panic across Egyptian social media.
The security services at Interior Ministry on Sunday revealed the truth behind the incident, which was entirely fabricated.
It confirmed that the Interior Ministry’s services followed up on the circulation of the post and that upon investigation, identified and arrested the party responsible for publishing it.
The source of these false claims is a woman who owns an advertising office residing in Montazah area of Alexandria.
The Interior Ministry explained that when confronted, the suspect admitted to fabricating the incident with the intention of increasing the number of her followers for achieve financial gain.
Legal measures have been taken against the suspect, the ministry confirmed, and the case is being referred to the Public Prosecution.
In a previous incident, Egyptian security services arrested a woman who spread another post claiming that there was a gang who kidnapped and killed young women in order to sell their organs.
After conducting investigations and collecting information, it was found that what was circulated was false, and the person responsible for publishing it was identified and arrested.
The culprit was working in hairdressing and women’s makeup in Cairo’s Basateen area.
The Interior Ministry said that when confronted, she admitted to publishing the fake news in order to increase the number of followers on her page and promote her work.
