State Minister for Environmental Affairs, Maged George, has decided to form a joint commission with the ministry’s branch at the Red Sea governorate to investigate environmental breaches in Hurghada, where two tourist resorts used heavy machinery to fill in land off the coast.
George noted that the work has been stopped until the owners of the resorts pay fines for the environmental damage they caused. He pointed out that legal action will be taken because of the fake clearances provided by the violators during the inspection.
A report by the Red Sea reserves governing body and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) unveiled infringements by two Hurghada resorts, which are located within the scope of the northern reserves.
The resorts used heavy machinery and vehicles to transport dust, pebbles, and rubble, causing severe damage to the region's marine life. The tools used in the process have been confiscated, and a report has been filed with the Hurghada police.
The Red Sea governor decided to halt all illegal work at both resorts and form a committee to monitor work conducted at all tourist villages in the province.
