Security forces in Giza Governorate foiled a prisoner escape attempt at Ayyat police station, south of Giza, on Tuesday.
The three prisoners set blankets and paper on fire and incited other detainees to escape, security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The police officers opened the cells, clashed with prisoners and put out the fire. The prisoners were then confined to separate cells.
The detainees have been referred to the prosecution, which ordered them to remain in custody for four days pending investigation.
During preliminary investigations, the prisoners confessed to having attempted to escape, according to a security source.
The men were originally detained on allegations of murder, robbery and drug trafficking.
