The European society of cardiology (ESC) issued a welcoming statement in response to the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recent ban on trans fats.
"The European society of cardiology welcomes FDA decision to ban industrial trans fats," reads the statement.
The FDA will phase out the use of trans fats in processed food over a three year compliance period and, in response, the ESC is calling upon policy makers on their side of the Atlantic to address the issue.
"Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of death in Europe," reads the statement, which acknowledges the threats trans fats pose to cardiovascular health, including the potential increase of LDL or "bad" cholesterol levels in the blood, which could lead to heart disease.
