The European Parliament has condemned election-related violence and political tensions in Egypt in the wake of Sunday's parliamentary poll.
At least two Egyptians died on election day.
President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, said Egypt needs to respect the rule of law, provide civil society and candidates greater guarantees of electoral integrity, and develop political party policies.
Freedom of press must be respected and opposition ballots must be protected, added Buzek, while pledging future elections will be transparent and pluralistic and an opportunity for regime reform. Busek vowed International observers will also monitor the electoral process.
Democracy is important for Egyptian citizens as well as the European Parliament, Buzed added.
