Sources at state daily Al-Gomhurriya revealed Tuesday that 32 former officials had returned a collective LE70 million to prosecutors for illegal gifts handed out as bribes by government media.
According to the newspaper, ex-President Hosni Mubarak paid LE2 million, while former Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi returned LE31, 479.
Ex-presidential staff Zakariya Azmy paid back LE76,000.
The sources added that former Central Bank Governor Farouk al-Oqda also returned LE15,000, with former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly giving back LE80,000.
However, the newspaper said former Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud and his assistant Adnan al-Fangari did not return LE45,000 and LE7,000 as ordered.
The Public Funds Prosecution began its investigation into the so-called newspaper gifts case in February after authorities uncovered the practice at several state-run media organizations.
