Family planning methods usage decline to 58 percent in 2014

The Ministry of Health has announced that the prevalence of use of family planning methods dropped to 58 percent in 2014, compared to 63 percent in 2008. Reliance on long-term methods has decreased from 36.5 percent to about 30 percent. Reliance on short-term methods has increased from 12.9 percent in 1992 to 16 percent in 2014.

Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman of the Ministry of Health, said that the national family planning program is based on four main themes: providing family planning methods and reproductive health services, securing the availability of these methods and services, improving the quality of the service, as well as marketing them and encouraging citizens to follow family planning programs.

Abdell Ghaffar added that the national family planning program is implemented through 5,952 clinics in all governorates, employing 8,395 doctors and 14,000 rural instructors, charged by the Health Ministry with spreading awareness of family planning in rural areas.

The Health Ministry aims to increase family planning rate to 74 percent by 2030, Abdel Ghaffar mentioned.
