Farmers to hand in local wheat by 20 June maximum: Minister

Minister of Food Supply and Domestic Trade, Khaled Hanafy, said on Sunday that the deadline for receiving local wheat from farmers and traders will be 20 June.

Around 3,654,933 tons of local wheat were received from mid-April until now.

Hanafy also said that farmers will get LE75 per bushel, which is a LE3.5 increase from last year.

The price of a ton of local wheat is higher than the imported wheat by LE800.

The strategic reserve of wheat can last for six months.

Egypt, the world's biggest wheat importer, purchases around 10 million tons of wheat annually from international markets. It uses a mix of local and imported wheat to produce subsidized bread.
