Internal coherence and firmness is crucial in the face of the challenges we face in Egypt, said Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).
In a televised statement aired on Saturday to mark 1952's 23 July revolution, Tantawi said all Egyptians need to put Egypt above all interests, keep it in their hearts and minds, and defend it with everything they have.
“The people who refused the defeat in 1967 and achieved victory in the great October war in 1973 are able to overcome the current difficulties and make history through cooperation and solidarity," he said.
Tantawi added that the SCAF is determined to build a modern democratic state and hand over power to an elected president and parliament.
Tantawi said Egypt is keen on maintaining strong relations with all countries and is committed to regional and international agreements. He also said Egypt will continue to support the Middle East peace process, adding that relations with Arab and African countries, particularly of the Nile Basin, are a priority.
