FJP nominates Shura Council speaker

The Freedom and Justice Party has nominated Ahmed Fahmy, who won the won the workers' seat in the Sharqiya constituency, to be the speaker of the Shura Council. Ali Fath al-Bab, the Shura Council representative of the second constituency in Cairo, was nominated to be Shura Council majority leader.

At the FJP Headquarters on Sunday, the party’s parliamentary committee discussed the FJP’s plan to develop regulatory and legislative mechanisms for in order to implement various issues and laws in the council.

The FJP won a resounding 58.8 percent of seats in the council, followed by the Salafi Nour Party, which won 25 percent of seats.

“The people are looking forward to activation of the Shura Council because it has major tasks ahead of it, including the selection of the members of the constituent assembly that will draft the new constitution,” said FJP chief Mohamed Morsy.

Morsy called on the FJP members in the Shura Council to revive the council’s spirit, as it has many duties, the most important of which is supervision of the Supreme Press Council, and a number of other councils and national bodies. He added that such responsibilities will require great effort and hard work to regulate these institutions in order to the benefit society.

Concerning the selection of members of the constituent assembly, Morsy said, “The party is keen on ensuring the participation of all groups, bodies, parties and political and community forces in this assembly in order to ensure that the new constitution reflects the Egyptian people, with all of their diversity.”
