Foreign Ministry delegation to discuss Iraqi debts to Egypt

A delegation from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry left for Iraq on Tuesday to discuss Iraqi debts to Egypt.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamed Mostafa Kamal and his assistant will carry a message from the foreign minister to his Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari, to urge Baghdad to hasten resolving the issue of “yellow remittances,” as well as other Iraqi debt.

Yellow remittances refer to the debt Iraq owes to Egyptian workers who fled the country after it invaded Kuwait in the early ‘90s, leaving their money and businesses behind.

This money is owed to about 637,000 Egyptians. The remittances total an estimated US$408 million.

Kamal told Al-Masry Al-Youm the visit reflects the top priority given to resolving the pending liabilities. The yellow remittances are individual debts that are not governed by international standards of debt negotiations, he said.
