Former Brotherhood figure criticizes mass death sentences

Dissident Muslim Brotherhood figure Kamal al-Helbawy slammed the death sentences handed to former Islamist President and other group members.

“I hope President Sisi would hear me. Law in Egypt is disabled,” he said in a talk show aired on the privately-owned Al-Assema TV channel on Saturday.

“Despite having a Constitution, anyone who knows the court verdicts in Egypt would say the judge is ruling for one country, while the [Constitution] is for somewhere else,” he added.

“It’s impossible that a judge gives death sentences to 600 [suspects] without lawyers,” he said adding, “Such verdicts have been debunked before the United Nations.”
